Alternative therapies for treating cancerby Melanie MartynThe big ‘C’ word sends an instant chill down the spine and compels us to utter a silent prayer - ‘please not me or my family’. So when the word ‘cancer’ describes yourself, or a loved one, the chill becomes a crushing pain around the heart; that was my reaction when I heard my beloved husband had colon/rectal cancer.Of course, we wouldn’t know how far the cancer had progressed until the surgeons removed the tumor. There was still hope if it had been found in the early stages my husband would likely return to a normal life. This was not the case however. The cancer had moved through the bowel wall into the lymph nodes. Conventional medicine offered us the usual cut, burn and poison options but something told us to look further before making any decisions. A year before I had seen chemotherapy and radiation’s effects on my girlfriend’s daughter, so I was not anxious to pursue that avenue without getting all the facts. Yet, we were too emotionally numb to think clearly after the biopsy came back positive (cancerous), and so we instantly elected for surgery. Afterwards, we had appointments with several oncologists to learn about proposed courses of action. The standard treatment involved radiation to the site of the removed tumor and chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil and levamisole or leucovorin (a folinic acid). I researched on the Internet, read a myriad of medical journals and case studies on colon/rectal cancer, only to discover a discouraging prognosis. The type of care suggested was more palliative then curative; the chemo dosages were all over the board and life extension benefits were only two to four months on average. The debilitating effects from a six month regimen of chemotherapy and radiation also made it an unsavoury choice. So our family decided together to investigate alternative possibilities. A brief synopsis of the avenues we discovered is below. These are just a few of the alternative therapies we learned about. They are presented in the most simplistic terms as an overview only. Books, journals and case studies for each modality are, for the most part, easily accessible. I can only suggest to others that they read, read and read even more before making any decisions about treatment. At the library or on the Internet there is a wealth of information to help one make an educated choice about alternative or conventional treatment options. EssiacEssiac is an Ojibwa herbal remedy used since the early 1920’s. Its main ingredients are burdock root, sheep sorrel, turkey rhubarb root, slippery elm and red clover blossoms, elements that act as a blood and liver cleanser and strengthen the immune system. Rene Caisse left nursing in 1922 to brew, administer orally and sometimes inject essiac (caisse spelled backwards) to treat cancer sufferers who had been given up on by the medical profession. Many terminally ill patients outlived their predicted life expectancy. Other documented cases that were listed as hopeless were cured and are living today, according to Dr. Gary Glum’s book, Calling of an Angel.PleomorphismMore than 100 years ago a French scientist, Antoine Bechamp (doctor, chemist and rival of Louis Pasteur), discovered tiny molecular granules called microzymas which could change size, shape and become disease-causing bacteria in the blood. In California in the 1930’s, researcher Royal Rife discovered pleomorphic organisms in human cancer specimens. In post-World War II France, biologist Gaston Naessens developed a somatoscope to view live organisms at high magnifications and discovered particles in the blood, he named ‘somatids’ which normally went through a three stage micro-cycle. If the immune system became stressed or damaged, the somatids evolved into a 16-stage cycle, which became associated with diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, lupus and AIDS. German bacteriologist, Guenther Enderlein discovered similar micro-organisms which he named ‘protits’.Whether referred to as microzymas, somatids or protits, pleomorphic organisms are visible through a darkfield microscope (or somatoscope) via live blood analysis. Any cells that are beyond a three-stage metamorphosis indicate a stress on the immune system, and a possible precursor to disease in the body. According to Naessens’s research, cancer cells often steal the nitrogen they need from healthy cells and give off what’s called a ‘K factor’ which paralyzes the immune system. Nassens’s 714X treatment is a nitrogen-rich camphor and organic salts solution that is injected into the lymphatic system (available through doctors who apply to Health and Welfare Canada’s emergency drug release program). By providing nitrogen via the camphor, cancer cells no longer have to immobilize healthy cells’ defence systems. This allows the immune system to pick up. The lymph system benefits as well since the organic salts allow the body to flush out toxins. Enderlein’s medications are produced in Germany and examples of this therapy include Mucokehl, Nigersan, Sanuvis L(+) and Utilin. The primary goal of the remedies is to help put the body back into balance, where the ‘protits’ revert to the three stage micro-cycle. The book Hidden Killers by Dr. Eric Enby, a Swedish medical doctor, provides an insightful account of pleomorphism theory and Dr. Enderlein’s treatments. ParasitesHulda Clark wrote several books, including Cure for all Cancers, about parasite infestation in the human body. The human intestinal fluke, known as Fasciolopsis buskii, is the culprit in cancer when it finds a home, primarily in the liver (although it can be anywhere). Due to a build-up of propyl alcohol in the body, the flukes are not contained in the intestine, where their eggs are usually evacuated from the body. Clark advocates killing any parasites in the body, preventing future infestations, and eliminating propyl alcohol (and related propyl products) in one’s system. Three main herbs are used together to kill the parasites: ground cloves, black walnut hull tincture and wormwood combination formula.Hospital Santa MonicaDr. Kurt Donsbach has a clinic in Baja, Mexico which offers treatment programs for cancer and other degenerative diseases. Some of the regimens include hyperthermia, ozone, thymus therapy, biomagnetics, hydrogen peroxide and various oxygen therapies. I kept in touch with a friend whose son had been given three weeks to live - he had bone cancer and we too weak to walk off the plane when he arrived at the clinic. After two weeks, however, he was able to run down the beach. He returned home to Canada where he lived for over two years with a good quality of life.ImmunoembryotherapyDr. Valentin Govalo is director at the Laboratory on Clinical Immunology in Moscow, Russia. He developed a strategy of immunoembryotherapy (a word he created to describe his treatment) aimed at suppressing the anti-immune tactics of cancerous tumors. Govallo developed a vaccine from cells obtained from placentas following normal childbirth, and for 18 years he has treated patients with advanced stages of breast, lung, uterus and other cancers with this vaccine. More than 70 percent of his patients (all of whom had been diagnosed as incurable after undergoing surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or all three) have survived over 10 years on Govalo’s treatment - tumors have been either reversed or their growth has been halted.DietAll of the above modalities touch on the subject of diet and nutrition in the prevention and control of cancers. The Macrobiotic diet, Moerman’s anti-cancer diet, the Hippocrates Institute plan (raw foods/wheat grass) and enzymatic treatments focus primarily on nutritional balance in the body, detoxification and the stimulation of the body’s own healing systems.Whether our family undertook too little or too much of any one modality
is moot. We did something, we became proactive, and that is the key to
surviving. My husband lived twice as long as the doctors predicted and
the quality of his life was very good, until the cancer took the lead.
Our hope kept us buoyant and in the best frame of mind possible under the
circumstances. I survived, and my husband lives on in the smile of our
little son.
